Army corps are used both to defend worlds from outside attackers and to attack other worlds. Corps may also be used to provide the control points used to subjugate foreign populations. I. There are five types of army corps. Each type has unique strengths and weaknesses, so in different situations different types of corps may have advantages over other types. A. Infantry corps are the most common corps type, and form the standard to which other corps are compared. Any time the rules refer to an army or a corps without diferentiating type, an infantry corps may be assumed. B. Militia corps are effectively infantry corps with a lower standard of training and less effective equipment than a standard infantry corps. 1. Militia corps may never be issued any orders other than 'return fire if fired upon.' 2. Militia corps may never be loaded on ships or moved off the world upon which they were constructed. 3. Militia corps have a negative modifier when returning the fire of another corps. 4. Corps attacking militia corps receive an attack bonus. C. Cavalry corps consist of troops transported by domestic animals or other light, fast, cheap transport. 1. Cavalry corps may never be loaded on ships or moved off the world upon which they were constructed. 2. Cavalry corps receive an attack bonus when firing upon another army corps or when returning fire on another corps. 3. Corps attacking cavalry corps receive an attack bonus. 4. Cavalry corps receive both a control point bonus of 20 points and a bonus when conducting pograms on civilians. D. Armored corps are troops protected by heavy armored vehicles and support equipment. 1. Armored corps may never be loaded on ships or moved off the world upon which they were constructed. 2. Armored corps receive an attack bonus when firing upon another army corps or when returning fire on another corps. 3. Corps attacking armored corps have a negative attack modifier. 4. Armored corps receive a control point bonus of 20 points. E. Marine corps are elite troops specially trained to attack other worlds from space. 1. Marine corps receive an attack bonus when firing upon another army corps or when returning fire on another corps. 2. Marine corps have a negative control point modifier of -20 points. 3. Marine corps are not very effective when conducting pograms. 4. Marine corps are the only type of army unit which may conduct assault landings. II. A corps may be ordered to return fire if fired upon. If no unit fires on that corps, then the corps will not attack anything. A. If another corps attacks a corps ordered to return fire, then the return fire will be directed at that corps. 1. If more than one corps attacks a corps ordered to return fire, then the return fire will be directed at the 'senior' corps firing on the return firing corps. B. If a ship attacks a corps ordered to return fire, then the return fire will be directed at that ship. 1. If more than one ship attacks an army ordered to return fire, then the return fire will be directed at the 'senior' ship firing on the return firing corps. 2. If both ships and army corps attack a corps ordered to return fire, the the return fire will be directed at the 'senior' corps firing on the return firing corps. III. A corps may be ordered to fire on a ship. This fire has about a 1 in 3 chance of hitting. Each hit affects the target ship as explained in the ship rules. A. If the target ship is moving in the same turn, the chance of effective fire is about 1 in 6. IV. A corps may be ordered to attack another corps. A. Each attack has slightly less than a 50 percent chance of destroying the other corps. The following modifiers apply to corps to corps combat: 1. The difference in experience levels between the corps will modify the chances of destroying the target corps. 2. The difference in surface warfare tech levels between the corps will modify the chances of destroying the target corps. 3. The difference in force field tech levels between the corps will modify the chances of destroying the target corps. B. When a corps attacks another corps, there is a chance that one of the involved corps may learn a tech level from the other if the other corps is more advanced in that technology. V. A corps may be ordered to attack the industry of a world. Each attack has slightly less than a 50 percent chance of reducing the industry of the world by one. The following modifiers apply to these attacks: A. The experience of the corps will provide a modifier to the success of the attack. B. The surface warfare tech level of the corps will provide a modifier to the success of the attack. VI. A corps may be ordered to attack population points on a world. This is also called a pogram. A. The nationality of the attacked population points must be included in the corps attack orders. B. Attacking population points will normally result in a fairly large loss of victory points for the attacking power. 1. If the target population points belong to a power which is considered a villain, then no victory points are lost. C. Each attack will generally destroy from 1 to 6 population points. The following modifiers apply: 1. The experience of the corps will provide a modifier to the effectiveness of the attack. 2. The surface warfare tech level of the corps will provide a modifier to the effectiveness of the attack. D. While a corps is ordered to conduct a pogram, it will receive a control point bonus of 50 points. VII. A marine or infantry corps may be ordered to board a ship. Unless a ship is also ordered to load the corps, no boarding will take place. VIII. A corps which is no longer needed may be ordered to be demobilized in order to save on maintenance costs. A. A corps may only be demobilized at a controled world. B. Two treasury points are added to the treasury of the controling power. 1. If the demobilized corps is a militia corps, then no treasury points are gained C. One population point is added to the world where the demobilization takes place. IX. A corps may be ordered to attack a trading post. Any corps ordered to attack a trading post will automatically destroy that trading post, but such an attack will result in a large loss of victory points and diplomatic reputation points. X. Each infantry, cavalry, armored or marine corps requires 1/8 of a treasury point per turn for maintenance. Militia corps require 1/16 of a treasury point per turn for maintenance. This cost is subtracted from the treasury of the controlling power each turn. No orders are required or allowed for this expense. XI. Corps experience levels: The experience level of a corps modifies how effective that corps's fire will be, as well as how well the corps defends itself. A. All corps start out at recruit level. B. A corps which has ten turns of experience becomes a regular level corps. This time will be shortened if the corps has combat experience. C. A corps which has one hundred turns of experience becomes a veteran level corps. This time will be shortened if the corps has combat experience. 1. If a militia corps reaches veteran status, then that corps is immediately promoted to recruit infantry. All previous militia restrictions are removed and the corps is treated as an infantry corps for all game purposes. D. The only way a corps can reach ace level is through combat experience. XII. Worldwide army orders: If a power has more than one corps on an individual world, then that power may issue worldwide army orders. A. If a power issues worldwide army orders, then the orders of all corps (except milita corps) on that world are instantly changed to conform to the worldwide orders. This WILL cancel any orders which any of those corps may have already been issued (including ship boarding orders - caution is advised when using this order). B. After worldwide army orders have been issued, a power may go back and change the orders of individual corps. Changing the orders of an individual corps will have no effect on the worldwide army orders, or the orders of any of the other corps that power controls.
